Trade Union Reform The economic, social and political circumstances of contemporary trade unionism are very different from those in which the strategies and structures of labour movement first emerged. This article takes a look at what unions are doing to adapt to the changing organizing environment. A version of this paper was published in the Public Services International magazine, Focus. The published version is available here.) The Free Rider Problem Are 'free riders' really a problem for trade unions? This article looks at the issue, and in particular the various solutions traditionally used in union organising, notably the closed shop. A version of this paper has appeared in International Union Rights, the journal of the International Centre for Trade Union Rights. Job Quality and the Trade Union Movement Trade unions are beginning to adopt the concept of ‘job quality’, which combines the traditional collective bargaining agenda with a new emphasis on job design, work organization, skills and career development. This article considers the pros and cons of the notion of job quality from a union perspective. A short version of this article will be published in PSI's Focus. |
